About Me

Brionadh is an Irish-Australian fiction writer and dog-walking enthusiast operating out of Gunaikurnai Country. Her interests include anything written from the perspective of an animal, mineral or vegetable, and writing things she's never seen before. Her literary influences include Ursula Le Guin, Oscar Wilde and the literary war stories of Snoopy the Beagle.

What I Read

I like to read stories with things that I haven’t seen before. I am a long time fantasy lover and grew up in the original Harry Potter generation. Kids behaving wildly always keeps me interested, and I’m addicted to the unexpected. Anything funny will have me caught in its trap in no time and I can’t pass by a talking animal.

Some long-time favourites are: The Dark Hills Divide by Patrick Carmen, Because of Winn Dixie by Kate Di Camillo, Rowan of Rin by Emily Rodda, Northern Lights by Phillip Pullman and The Spook’s Apprentice by Joseph Delaney and A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L’Engle.

Newer favs include The Yield by Tara June Winch, Cate Kennedy’s Like a House on Fire, Flames by Robbie Arnot and Mullumbimby by Melissa Lucashenko.

What I Write

Much of what I write is inspired by where I live, in the sticks in Gippsland. I’m surrounded by farmland and farming people. As the child of Irish immigrants, my imaginary landscape has always been dominated by faeries, mystical landscapes and deep roots in Irish culture and music.

I’m fascinated by dualities, contradictions, and seeing how far I can push weird combinations of grammar and syntax before my editor reigns me in.

Tutoring

For the past ten years, I have been working as a tutor helping students achieve VCE and IB English success. I specialise in helping year 9-12 students to address gaps in their English study performance that may be holding them back. With targeted strategies based on a decade’s experience and the knowledge that comes from my Masters of Teaching and my Masters of Writing and Literature, I work in tailored 1 on 1 online tutoring to help students achieve their best performance.
